Members of the district, including Lodges from Gloucester, Taree, Wingham, Laurieton and Forster, came together recently to witness the ceremony that dates back to the first lodge consecration in 1878.
Freemasonry has had a strong presence in the region for in excess of 138 years, but is not widely understood in society today. Opening the lodges to the community and demystifying masonry, is one of the chief tasks in the coming term.
To promote a greater awareness in the community, lodges of the district will have an open day on November 5. Anyone in the community is invited to come along and view the lodge room, its symbols, furniture and masonic memorabilia and have the symbolism of masonry explained.
Freemasons come from all walks of life, trades and professions, local members include a world kickboxing champion and many sportsman from all sports. We have contributed large amounts of money and physical assistance to many charities and community groups in the local area. Masonry has not publicised its charity well and tended not seek the limelight for its work, however this has not helped membership.
Each of the lodges have some exciting young members, enjoying the challenges and social side of freemasonry, but masonry needs to attract more young men to ensure its viability.
