Once in our allocated four wheel drive vehicle, the walkers ventured up the Scone Road to head into the Barrington Tops Plateau area. After a very bumpy ride (sports bras a must!) and some feral wildlife spotting (11 Brumbies), a surprisingly cool start met the walkers that reached the Junction Pools Campground (it was at least 10 degrees cooler than when we set off).
Spare jackets and jumpers were distributed to those feeling the cold; flasks of hot tea and coffee were pulled out (along with some delicious home-made cakes and biscuits) so that all could warm up before the day’s adventure.
Once warmed up nine members of the group ventured onto the plateau walk. The three remaining walkers decided to explore the area around Junction Pools.
The plateau walkers needn’t have worried about warming up with tea and coffee, they were soon stripping of the layers as they followed the track up Aeroplane Hill. Not only was the exertion warming, the sun was also helping out. The lure of a promised clear view at Carey’s Peak kept everyone enthused just as much as the scenery. The walkers passed through forest, past swamps, snow gums and snow grass which housed many bird species and kept the birdwatchers among the group happy.
Then there it was, perfect timing (lunch time) and a perfect view from the Peak, at 1544 metres. A vista of the Barrington Tops out towards the ocean was enjoyed, with many photos taken. Ships and surf were spotted with the aid of binoculars. After a bite to eat at Carey’s Hut the group returned via Edwards Swamp and crossing the source of the Barrington River near Junction Pools with only a few managing to keep their feet dry.
As the sun went down and temperatures cooled it was time to leave. On the ride out more wildlife was spotted (brumbies and a wombat). Discussion about the issues of feral animals in our National Parks then followed on the way home.
The Gloucester Environment Groups next outing is a ‘walk’ which can either be a day outing on Saturday, November 26 or a camping trip for one or two nights (25th and 26th, camping fees apply). You can do as much of the program or as little as you like.
The venue is Dingo Tops /Tapin Tops National Park with waterfalls, creeks and many birdwatching opportunities. Meeting time for day walkers car-pooling from Billabong Park (Skate Park) is 8.15am. Then meet at 10am at the Dingo Tops camping area.
