The inquisitive calf was seen nosing around the buoy before it was herded back out to deeper water by its mother.
Paul Dart was fishing off the wall and having a barbecue with friends, when he managed to snap some pictures of the whales before they returned to deeper water.
“I first saw the young one near the buoy about 30 metres off the rockpool wall,” Paul said.
“It took the mother and calf about 20 minutes to get back through the current and out off Forster Main Beach.”

From where he was standing, Paul thought the whales looked like humpbacks.
“The mother turned the calf pretty quickly, so I think the little one might have gotten lost,” he said.
