President Vic Hebblewhite said the new sand-based green would lead to “significant savings” for the club into the future, with the low maintenance option assisting with the club’s financial position.
Heavy construction vehicles moved into the club last weekend to begin digging up the existing turf green.
Mr Hebblewhite said the synthetic green was being built by KCL Sports, a Newcastle based company that specialises in installing artificial playing surfaces for lawn bowls and tennis.
He said the new green would take between two to three weeks to install and it would be another six weeks before any play was possible.
Gloucester’s second turf green will remain in place for the time being.
“At this stage it will remain,” Mr Hebblewhite said.
“We could look at it down the track, but we really only use two greens four times a year for big competitions.”
Mr Hebblewhite said the synthetic green would cost about $180,000 to install, with further improvements such as new seating and paving bringing the club’s total spend to about $200,000.
