Residents across the Mid North Coast region ‘did it right and burned it bright’ in a collective effort to pollution from wood smoke over winter.
Gloucester Shire, in collaboration with the seven other shires that are members of the Mid North Coast Regional Organisation of Councils, participated in this year’s ‘Do it Right, Burn it Bright’ campaign.
The campaign objective was to draw the community’s attention to environmental and health issues associated with atmospheric wood smoke that occurs throughout the winter months.
Mayor John Rosenbaum said the campaign was effective in highlighting the fact that wood smoke posed a risk to the environment and human health and provided easy solutions to help individuals reduce their heater’s smoke output.
Along with hints and tips on how residents could reduce wood smoke emissions from their wood heaters, a character naming and colouring-in competition was run to engage young people with the cartoon character developed for the campaign.
Tanai’s colouring-in effort was voted the outstanding entry.
