A young mother made the discovery on Wednesday June 1, while her children were playing in the park a last week and contacted police and council.
MidCoast council staff and police went to the park immediately and placed a barrier about the site. They were unable to see any evidence of the syringes at the time but decided to empty to pit as a precaution.
On Friday, while excavating the site, they uncovered nine needles buried within the sand.
Council completes periodic safety checks of the playgrounds and have never come across anything like this before.
They are unsure at this stage what to do with the pit from a public safety point of view. The barrier around the area will remain until council decides what to do with the site that is fun and safe for kids.
