Tim Threadgate and Stuart Paynter grew beards over the rugby season to help raise funds and awareness for Bears Of Hope Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support through Beards of Hope.
Thanks to Tim’s sister-in-law Danielle Reeves, students from St Joseph’s took turns shaving off the beards. The school donated $100 in exchange for an afternoon of rugby training and the chance to take clippers to the player’s faces. A few Gloucester Pre-School students also joined in as they were having an orientation day at the school.
Teacher, Lee Sullivan organised the day after Danielle told him about the fundraiser. Lee thought it was a good cause and decided to add in some training.
“School is a really great union,” he laughed, making a pun about the rugby union club.
The pupils all came with their own beards, some drawn on with black marker, others made from coloured pipe cleaners. Tim, Stuart and their Gloucester Cockies coach Steve Parkin ran the training drills with the support of the teachers. Lee, the coach of the Wallanbah Bulls, got into the spirit of things and added his own flare to the tackling drill.
The beards raised around $1600.
Tim said he is really going to miss his facial hair and is looking forward to growing it again next year.
