“We will be setting everything up on the beach on Friday. There is a lot of equipment that needs to be put in its place for the competitions,” president of the South West Rocks Surf Life Saving Club Rod McDonagh explained.
The beach will be packed with competitors from across the state and McDonagh says it is a great opportunity for their juniors to showcase their talents.
We have great facilities, a good straight beach and plenty of area to conduct events.

“We have a lot of strong competitors and a few stand outs,” McDonagh said.
“Cooper and Bradley Schubert are two young all rounders who will compete in almost everything.
“Kiralee Silvia is a great board paddler and Reece Owens is strong in the swimming and beach events.
“They all earned medals at the inter-branch competition held last week.”
McDonagh is expecting about 60 South West Rocks club members to compete in this weekend’s Country Championships.
He says there is a lot of contributing factors for South West Rocks earning the honour to host the event for the second straight year.
“We have great facilities, a good straight beach, plenty of area to conduct events, accommodation is easy to access and within walking distance of the beach and of course the welfare and safety for competitors is considered,” McDonagh said.
“The support from the council and community for the event is a massive help too and along with all the effort put in by our club members to make the event happen.”
The Stramit NSW Country Surf Life Saving is one of the biggest events on the surf sports calendar and is open to clubs outside the Newcastle-to-Illawarra corridor.
