Around 60 bags of clothes, bed linens and blankets were put into Robert and Nathalie Abbott’s truck ahead of the delivery to the Lismore Showground. There was also fives boxes donated by Gloucester Quota, as well as a few non-perishable food items.
Robert and co-pilot, Cedric Salter headed up north on Wednesday, May 3.
The group started collecting and sorting donations received at the church over the past four weeks, since the floods devastated communities like Lismore.
The goods will be taken to the showground and distributed by Lifeline to the families who need it most.
Volunteers get together on a regular basis to sort through all the items received at the church. They empty the donation box and take the items into the church hall, where anywhere between 13 to 22 people assist with the sorting. They need to go through each item to remove anything that’s not suitable to pass on.
Items that are acceptable are things like clean clothes, bed linens, blankets that are still in good condition and under garments that are new.
Once the items are sorted, some things get put into the shop on King Street to be sold to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The excess is sent to Sydney, where they are resorted, cleaned and sent to various regions in Africa.
The shop is run by many volunteers, but more are always needed. If you are interested in lending a hand, all are welcome to come down to the shop.
