Gloucester’s Helen Evans said as she celebrated achieving her Performers Certificate for piano.
She spoke to a room full of piano students at the end of year performance hosted by Annette Burrows at the Gloucester Christian Outreach Centre on Sunday, December 10.
Helen was the last to perform, playing “Quebec Concerto”, the theme song from the 1940s movie, Whispering City from the songbook she has been holding onto for 60 years.
After she played, Annette congratulated Helen on achieving her Performers Certificate, which is a step above eighth grade.
“I've been waiting for this since I was 14 years old,” she told the audience.
“So don’t give up.”
Having turned 80 years old only six days before, she stressed the importance of not giving up. Helen learned to play piano as a child but gave it up when she was 14 years old.
Five years ago, she came into a little bit of money unexpectedly, so she decided to buy herself a piano.
“I had been carting around music for 60 years but I didn’t know how to play it, so I went to Annette,” she explained.
She picked up where she left off and has been working her way through the remaining grades with Annette supporting her along the way.
“She brings the music and I just point out a few things,” Annette said. “She does it all herself.”
And after all these years, Helen has finally achieved her childhood dream.
“It’s been hard but worth it to achieve my goal,” she smiled.
