MidCoast Council mayor David West left the December meeting for a short period while the council considered his application for a grazing licence at Dawson River sewer treatment plant.

The mayor had previously declared his interest in the item, and his intention to leave the meeting for any debate, at the start of the meeting, as is protocol.
Cr West licensed an area of land adjacent the sewer treatment plant between 2007 and 2012, which was then further extended for five years between 2012 and 2017. He requested an extension of the licence for a further 12 months.
Requests such as this are usually dealt with under delegated authority but the report was brought to the full council’s consideration to be transparent, because of the position Cr West holds.
Council agreed to grant the licence.
