Mr Linke’s skills were put to the test when he entered the 2017 regional Worldskills competition and took home a gold medal in the business services category.
“Worldskills is the first major award I’ve won,” he said. “I wanted to test my skills against others and see how much I’d learned. I think the way I studied at TAFE helped prepare me for working independently in such a competitive environment.”
Building on this recent success, his outstanding work was recognised when he received a Certificate of Excellence at the TAFE NSW Taree Student Awards held in December last year.
“It was great coming up for the awards night,” Mr Linke said. “I was really happy to be acknowledged and to also be presented with the Worldskills medal.”
“Jimmy is a very motivated student, so studying flexibly was perfect for him,” Deborah Kelly, teacher of business at Taree TAFE, said. “He was able to choose the way he wanted to study and work independently.”
Mr Linke had previously completed a Certificate III in Business Administration and was clear he wanted to study at TAFE NSW again via flexible delivery for his Certificate IV in Business Administration.
“My Certificate IV was a mixture of mostly online learning, on-campus classes with plenty of support from the teachers,” the 20-year-old said. “Studying this way felt like I was in real office, doing real work and it’s helped me get ready for the workplace. It worked for me!”
Mr Linke moved to Sydney at the end of 2017, to further his career options and his teacher is optimistic about his prospects.
“Jimmy has a good attitude and is very polite. He’s conscientious and committed and ultimately he’s going to be a real asset to an employer,” Ms Kelly said.
