Junior Panthers
This was the Junior Panthers hockey team’s second time up against Wingham and with a solid victory last round, they were confident in taking them on again.
The team took the opportunity to allow some of the younger team players a chance to show their capabilities. This didn’t stop centre forward, Justin Battams from having a shot at every opportunity. He was the first to put points on the scoreboard.
Captain, Dean Germon kept control over the team organising the players and making solid connections through the centre of play. Wingers, Toreen Denyer and Ryan Beggs, worked hard up the sidelines with valuable crosses across the goal and some great breaks up the sideline. Wingham was not without their strength and pushed into Gloucester territory many times giving fullbacks, Darcey Fry and Nathan Woods plenty to work on as well saw some great saves from keeper, Elise Coombes. Elyssa Keen had a run at centre half from the second half and did a great job chasing up making valuable leads and saves earning her Play of the Day. In total, there were 3 goals to Justin Battams and another 3 goals to Dean Germon to see the Gloucester team with a win 6-2.
On Monday night they faced off against the Taree Sharks team with a reduced lineup due to four players being out with PSSA hockey commitments.
Men’s division 3
As soon as the hockey team took to the field, the rain started pouring down and didn’t let up throughout the whole game.
On Saturday, the Panthers came up against Chatham J & T, the only team they haven’t faced up against so far this season. The poor weather made conditions for the two teams quite levelling. Gloucester was not able to get on top of their passing game being intercepted at every step by some great traps from the Chatham team. There were some close calls as the opposition made several breaks down their right side to keep pressure on Gloucester’s defence but the Panthers were able to break back on each occasion with some runs in open ground on both the right and left wings.
A break came half way through the first half when some clever passing from Warren Beggs onto Dave Keen lead to a deflection off the goalies pads into the net. There were a few more missed attempts from the Gloucester team with some shots just wide or just over the goal. A second break came from a long corner where a pass from the baseline back to the top of the circle, saw Warren Beggs put a solid shot straight into the goal. The second half continued in much the same spirit between the two teams but as the rain continued shots became impeded. Twenty minutes into the second half, the Chatham Wolves had their first chance at recovering the score line as they placed a great shot through Gloucester’s defence from a short corner. The two teams kept each other at bay for the remainder of the half playing out the rainy weather to see Gloucester continue its undefeated record with a win 2-1.
Their next match has them playing against Tigers KFC team on Thursday night.
