The volunteer-led museum is one of 11 community museums from throughout the State selected to receive funding from the government’s arts, screen and culture agency Create NSW.

The funding comes through the Volunteer Museum Small Grants Program, administered by Museums & Galleries of NSW (M&G NSW) to facilitate vital improvements for volunteer-run museums across the State.

Under the program, in the first of two annual funding rounds, the government has allocated more than $17,500 to community museums from regional NSW.

The display of historic objects and artefacts will be complemented by brochures.

Long-time Bulahdelah Historical Society and Courthouse Museum president, Kevin Carter explained a limited number of volunteers meant the museum only was opened for one day a week.

He said the brochures and stations explaining the history and relevance of the objects and artefacts to the community would open up the museum every day.

“This will make it more user friendly,” Mr Carter said.

Since Bulahdelah was by-passed back in 2013 the town has re-badged itself from a highway service centre to tourism, annually attracting an increasing number of visitors.

“We are getting more and more people coming to Bulahdelah,” Mr Carter said.

The grant will be topped up with in-kind donations from the community.

“It’s a nice contribution; we’re pretty happy.”

Mr Carter said the project should be finished in time for Bulahdelah’s annual Australia Day celebrations.

“Bulahdelah Courthouse Museum is a fantastic part of the community and it’s wonderful to know that this support will lead to some valued improvements,” Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead said.

“This investment is very welcome and I look forward to seeing the results,” Mr Bromhead said.
