The young artist has been working on his first comic book for the past year charting his adventures with Spotty the dog and Meow the cat.
While some of the stories are plucked straight from Bowie’s imagination, many are inspired by his own life with local events featuring in the collection.
One of his favourites stories sees his characters at the Wingham Show where they watch pig racing and Spotty decides to have a go on the bumper cars.
Bowie has autism and is home schooled by his mum Emma-Lea who wholeheartedly supports her son’s love of comics.
“Bowie taught himself to read with Garfield,” she said.
So far Bowie has 63 pages of his own drawings and is hoping to compile a total of 99 so he has the same amount of pages as one of his favourite Garfield books.
He cites the comic series created by Jim Davis as his favourite and says the everyday antics of Garfield (the cat), Jon Arbuckle (the human) and Odie (the dog) has inspired his own work.
“I got the idea of Spotty from reading Garfield but Spotty has some different stuff he likes to eat because he’s a dog,” said Bowie.
It seems Spotty likes to try new things and recently the little dog even found his way into 3D. Bowie shaped him from clay, hand painted him and now he shares space with all of Bowie’s pens on his desk.
As well as drawing comics and working with clay, Bowie likes to make stop motion animation movies featuring his cast of characters.
He hopes to finish all the artwork for his book soon, including the front and back cover, so he can staple it all together and sit it beside his treasured collection of Garfield books.
