“I wrote the song because it is my way of expressing that as men we need to stand up for women’s rights,” he said.
“For our mothers, for our grandmothers, for our aunties, for our sisters, for whoever.”
The song was released on Sunday night. In the first 48 hours of it being uploaded to the internet, it had received 30,000 views.
The Launceston musician said he was brought up by his mother, who taught him to respect women.
He said he has been told stories from his female friends about the sexism they have experienced at their workplace from their male co-workers.
“It really did frustrate me, that is when I was like, this is wrong and men need to start saying that it is wrong,” he said.
Brown said he understood that not all men were perpetrators, but maintained they had an important role to play in educating other men.
“No, it is not all men, but this is not just a women’s problem, it is our problem as well,” he said.
Brown said that toxic masculinity meant men often had it ingrained that they needed to be tough, and not show emotion.
Couch said that it was nice to hear a male voice standing up for females.
“We see females standing up for females all the time and there’s not many males out there doing it,” she said.
Brown said he was nervous about the response the song would receive when he first pressed the upload button.
“In the process of this song we ran it by so many people,” he said.
He was walking his dog when he heard from Couch that they had made it to number six on iTunes.
The duo said they had only received positive responses to the song.
“Ultimately we want to gain awareness, I want to inspire men to speak up for women’s rights,” he said.
