The vote to rescind council’s adoption of “Barrington Coast” as our destination name for tourism promotion was lost in very arrogant circumstances which were “procedurally legal” but insensitive to public opinion and an insult to concerned citizens in attendance.
In short, once the rescission motion was moved, debate was gagged by an immediate procedural motion that “the motion be put” – that is, that the rescission motion be put. The seconder did not get a chance to speak nor others in support of the rescission.
Most importantly, the five councillors and the mayor who supported the Barrington Coast proposal did not stand before the gallery and state their case. They knew they had the numbers so they rammed it through.
