Being somewhat ambivalent, however aware of the passion shown by a large number of the community in opposition to the name, I elected to attend as an observer.
We were treated to a spectacle in the best tradition of Shakespearian theatre. There were moments of passion, high drama and pure comedy.
We heard from seven speakers in support of the motion, backed by a phalanx of cheering spectators waving “NO” signs and one brave speaker against the motion, who received mainly jeers.
We heard from one emotional councillor in support of the motion and another clinical councillor calling for a vote. Comedy was provided in the form of points of order.
We heard references to a government issued handbook on council rules and regulations.
High drama was centre stage when the three councillors supporting the motion, elected to vacate their chairs and left the meeting
The vote resulted in the rescission motion being overturned and the shire will now become a destination name called Barrington Coast.
Driving home allowed me some reflection.
The brand name has no impact on me or mine.
I continue to be within the Myall Coast. I continue to reside in Tea Gardens and marvel at the Myall River. I will continue to visit the wonderful Hawks Nest beach and walk along the picturesque Jimmys foreshore.
There is no change and if the brand brings in extra tourists I will be pleased on their behalf.
