Gloucester Public Shool’s Marley Young has run the second fastest 100 metres, nine years division, in the Hunter region, landing her a place in the State competition.
It’s all part of the NSW Primary Schools Sports Association competition which sees students compete from school level to national level in a range of sports.
Marley represented GPS at the Manning Zone competition on August 8 at the Harry Elliott Oval in Tuncurry. She came first in the 100m (9yrs) with a time of 15.76 seconds.
Her result meant she qualified for the regional competition held at the Hunter Sports Centre’s Athletics track in Glendale on Friday August 31, where she won her heat finishing in 15.73 seconds. In the final, she beat her time, completing the dash in 15.30 seconds, landing her in second place.
Her dad, Mitchell Young thought she did pretty good considering she was the only one not wearing spikes.
“Apparently they make a difference,” he said. “So, she’s got new boots for the final.”
He explained how Marley is fairly new to running and has only recently joined Gloucester Little Athletics. And now she’s off to the State competition in Sydney on October 31.
This achievement comes off the back of her having a very successful GPS athletics carnival where she won a fist full of ribbons. Among the accolades was first place in 100m (9yrs) plus a school record for a time of 16.57 seconds and first place in 200m.
