Hosted by Great Lakes Breast Cancer Support Group, Breast Friends, the event was a chance for those whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer to gather, reflect and raise awareness.
White silhouettes were also planted in the ground to commemorate those who have died from the disease, while a lone blue man was placed among the others to represent the men who have been impacted.
“This event is very emotionally significant for many people,” event organiser, Heather Kelly explained.
“It’s a chance to reflect on those who have lost the fight, and a chance to think about our own circumstances.
“We live with this everyday, there is always the fear and possibility of it returning.
“But, whilst the number of those diagnosed with breast cancer has increased, so has the number of survivors.”
Heather added that it was a moving experience to stand among so many survivors.
Breast Friends member, Barbara Dolahenty was excited to celebrate her upcoming milestone of 10 years free of cancer.
“It’s a very happy story for me,” she said.
“After having chemo, radiotherapy and surgery I’ve come out of it pretty well, but it’s good to have a chance to support others as well.
“It’s important to have groups like this in the community, especially if you are new to it because there are a lot of things you don’t know.
“You can get in touch with people who have gone through it all.
“It’s also a really good friendship group, people start coming for friendship and keep coming because you like the people and the events.”
The Breast Friends group holds meetings on the first Wednesday of each month, and the group’s membership sits at around 160 people who have experienced breast cancer.
