This isn’t the first time Alex Bratfield has grown facial hair, nor is it the first time he’s taken part in Movember.

But it’s the first time he’s been seen busking on Church Street while trying to raise awareness and money for men’s health.
A few years ago, Alex took part in Movember with his brother James and after that experience, Alex decided asking people for money wasn’t for him.
He did, however, want to keep on raising money for the cause designed to make a difference for men's health – in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.
“So I thought I would combine it with something I enjoy,” Alex explainedm, which is playing music.
Alex has performed in live gigs before with the assistance of sound equipment, but never acoustic on the footpath, but he thought he’d give it a go. So for three consecutive Saturdays in November, he stood out from the National Parks and Wildlife Services office, laid down his guitar case and played a few tunes between 9am and noon.
He wasn’t sure how he’d go, but after raising $200 on his first afternoon, he was pretty sure this was the way to go. He already had a mustache before starting the fundraiser, which is a little bit outside the rules, but after talking to the organisers, it was suggested he set a fundraising goal using the shaving of his ‘mo’ as enticement for reaching it.
His goal was $500, which he smashed.
But his fundraising effort expanded beyond his Church Street adventures, with a money collection jar placed at Ollies Service Centre where he works, as well as playing a gig at the Gloucester Soldiers Club, where both the club and its patrons donated to the cause.
For him, Movember is a cause worth singing for. “In my eyes, mental health is a big thing. You hear about young men taking their lives and you want to do something to help.
“I’m just trying to do my bit to help lower the rate or stop it completely.” In total Alex raised $1440.65 and on Sunday December 2, he shaved his face. His fundraising success has inspired him to look at making his busking for a cause a regular thing with hopes of helping out other organisations.
