Organisers say the rally will be peaceful, and is taking place for concerned community members to express their opposition to council proceeding with their plan to relocate 340 council administration staff to the old Masters building.
“The idea to relocate administrative staff to a central location is not a major priority for our council,” spokesperson Katrina Pearson said.
“The project was hastily conceived and has proceeded with the backing of the mayor and a majority of councillors without genuine community consultation. The Masters site was purchased before a proper business case was put together and money continues to be spent on something the majority of community members are opposed to.
“The recent series of public meetings was a failure as many people were not notified in time. A number of culminating issues have motivated the community to take this action. The community will no longer allow themselves to feel disempowered by our council decision makers,” Katrina Pearson said.
