With Papua New Guinea being our country of study, international officer, Penny Charles gave us some interesting facts about our nearest neighbour. Plans are well in hand for our international lunch held on May 27. Invitations have been received from nearby branches to attend their international celebrations.
Sandy Tebbet, agriculture and environment officer discussed the fresh water carp, a significant pest in Australia. This highly prolific fish has no natural predators. It can be processed into an effective fertilizer and it's skin may be tanned, with the leather six times stronger than cow hide.
Handicraft officer, Claire Reynolds reminded members that items for group competition are due at our March meeting. Several beautiful pieces of work have already been submitted.
The on-going drought was discussed and our State office is continuing to distribute funds with 3754 applications worth $6.29 million having been processed to assist farmers with household support.
On a lighter note, members are looking forward to an opportunity to delve into their wardrobes, don a little black dress and enjoy a champagne supper while listening to enthralling speakers on February 27. Visitors are invited to this girls only night and bookings can be made with Sandy on 0419027086. Next meeting is Tuesday, March 12 at 10am. Visitors always welcome.
