It's been two years since the last one, so Gloucester High School's next musical is eagerly anticipated.

Like always, there is no coming up with a simple, easy production. No, these guys like to go big and spectacular. This year's choice is the classic film, The Wizard of Oz, brought to life on the humble high school stage.

Scott Davis, who is by day the school's drama teacher and by night the production's director, said they choose this musical as it's something that the audience will have a connection to. Being such an iconic film, it's likely people will have seen it or at least have some idea of what's about.

But it wasn't just a simple case of choosing the musical, it was about finding the right version that hits all the right notes.

"We're doing the Royal Shakespeare Company version, which is the closet to the film as I wanted to be faithful to the original," Scott said. "Some other versions don't have all the well known songs and I wanted to produce something people would recognise."

Students have been rehearsing since early February, learning lines, stage movements and all the songs.

"It important that it's something the students have fun making and that the audience will enjoy," Scott explained. "But it has come with its own set of challenges.

"For one, there's a live dog and it's the biggest set we've ever produced. This has involved the most amount of man hours than any high school production I've been a part of."

There's a lot of work going on behind the scenes with set design, props, projections and a live band, directed by the school's music teacher, Judy Ingram. The list of helpers is long and very important to the entire production.

Pubic performances will be held at GHS Hall on Tuesday, June 25 at 7pm, Wednesday, June 26 at 7pm, Friday, June 28 at noon and 7pm, and Saturday, June 29 at 7pm. Tickets cost $10 per adults, $6 concession or a family of four at $28, and can be purchased through the school on 6558 1605.
