Forty two years ago, an urban myth began about a group of art students who pulled off the ultimate party prank, convincing the local publican they were a well rehearsed band and striking a deal of a gig in exchange for free beer. The plan worked better than they could have imagined and so began the illustrious career of Mental As Anything. Over two decades later, they're still recording and touring with no plans of slowing down.

Mental As Anything is bringing their act to the Gloucester Soldiers Club as part of the 2019 Gloucester Chill Out Festival on Saturday, July 27.
After recently releasing a brand new five track EP titled "Mental As Anything", original band members Greedy Smith and Martin Plaza continue to trade songs in their time-honoured tradition.
"Martin and I have spent our lives competing with songs," Smith said. "It's not stopping. He does his things his way and I do mine - the way it's always been and the competition continues."
While Martin is currently off the road, the two continue to create new songs with that familiar Mental flavour. The band will be performing their unmistakable unique sound and delivering all their classic hits like "The Nips Are Getting Bigger", "If You Leave Me Can I Come Too", "You're So Strong", "Too Many Times" and "Live It Up" just to name a few.
"We have been touring consistently for most of the time we have been together," Smith said.
Tickets are $40 and are on sale now at the club or via the club's Facebook event listing. This 18 years and over event kicks off at 7.30pm.
