A first for the Taree community, the MRI will be located in the recently completed Medical Imaging Department on level two of the hospital's outpatients building.
Member for Lyne Dr David Gillespie said the machine will boost the diagnostic capability for all the doctors working in the hospital.
"The MRI machine gives much more detail than a cat scan and it does a lot of soft tissue imaging so there's no part of the human body that can't be scanned by the machine," Dr Gillespie said.
Member for Myall Lakes, Stephen Bromhead said the MRI will be complemented by a new CT scanner, which is also due to arrive in the coming month and both machines will be up and running by August.
"The MRI and CT machines will provide first-class, accessible and integrated medical services close to home for the community of Taree and the surrounding Great Lakes regions," Mr Bromhead said.
