About 4.50pm on Monday, July 6, emergency services were called to the site after a white Suzuki Jimmy collided with a white Hino rigid tabletop.
The driver of the Suzuki, a 90-year-old man, died at the scene.
The driver of the Hino, a 24-year-old man, was not injured and returned a negative result to a roadside breath test. He was transported to the Mater Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
Officers attached to Port Stephens-Hunter Police District attended and began an investigation.
A southbound lane of the highway and the northbound right-turning lane into Myall Way were closed for a short time.
The Hino was transporting two steers at the time. The animals were not injured in the incident.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
