After nine years of success, the Bucketts Way Neighbhourhood Group (BWNG) has signed a new service agreement with the Cancer Council NSW to continue the Transport to Treatment (T2T) program.
T2T is designed to provide transport for patients who do not have the means and ensures that vital cancer treatment is not missed due to a lack of access to suitable transport. The funding covers the cost of the client's contribution to the transport and the volunteer drivers are reimbursed for their mileage.
BWNG T2T coordinator Kylie Galvin said they were thrilled to renew the partnership.
"We are blessed to have such a dedicated support network of local volunteers to call on," Kylie said. "The statistics from last year show just how valuable this service is to our community."
Last financial year BWNG volunteer drivers worked together to provide 185 trips to treatment for cancer patients, travelling over 44,000 kilometres and amassing over 1143 hours of donated time and service.
And it's all thanks to the selflessness of drivers like Pam and Barb who give their time for free and use their own vehicle to help others. The pair have been volunteer drivers for the last 18 months. They not only transport people to medical appointments in places like Taree and Newcastle, but they also deliver hot lunches for those taking up the Meals on Wheels service.
"When I moved here I didn't have work, so I decided to volunteer. I wanted to help the community," Pam said. "I hope someone does it for me one day."
"Bucketts Way Neighbourhood Group and its fabulous volunteers deliver an amazing program and service," Cancer Council community programs coordinator Tim Chapman said. "The vital support ensures no cancer sufferer who is transport disadvantaged misses out on cancer treatment."
