It was wonderful to retrospectively acknowledge the award winners from 2014 through to 2019, and then celebrate the winners from the past year.
The major award for 2020 went to the Kristy Sultana-trained Flying Ricciardo which was crowned Greyhound Of The Year after winning the Group 1 Sportsbet Megastar at Dapto, the Sires On Ice Black Top at The Gardens, and the Gold Muzzle Auction Final at Wentworth Park.
The awards will now again become an annual event where we can celebrate the magnificent achievements of both participants and their greyhounds from the previous year.
Awards Highlight
While all of our award winners were thoroughly deserving, perhaps the two who stole the show were the recipients of the Allen Wheeler Medals, Paul Ambrosoli and Ted Doss.
PA was the voice of greyhound racing for so many years as our leading racecaller, before retiring in 2014. It was wonderful to hear his dulcet tones sounding just as they did so many years ago, as he entertained the room with just a handful of the many fabulous stories from his time in the industry.
Ted, the man who established the famed Osti bloodlines, is 94 and lives in Wallendbeen near Cootamundra. Although still spritely, Ted unfortunately couldn't make it to the ceremony but he recorded a very entertaining interview and told many stories, including the one about how he bought his first greyhound for four pounds.
Club Forum
The team from Greyhound Racing NSW held the annual Club Forum at Wentworth Park on Saturday, and it was a very productive and successful event.
Representatives from most of our clubs were able to attend, and were given wide ranging updates on the industry, as well as being able to give any feedback to GRNSW.
Keeping our industry across everything we are doing at headquarters is vital and these engagement days have proven very beneficial in the past and I believe Saturday's gathering was no exception.
Every Home
You may have seen our new racing marketing campaign launched last week around the Greyhound Super Series, and it coincided with our new Greyhounds As Pets campaign.
The campaign uses the line "Every Home Is A Greyhound Home", and points out: "Wherever you live, a beautiful, loving greyhound would love to call it home! Greyhounds make the best pets, as they're adaptable, are great with kids, and extremely gentle."
