It was a Stableford event 'across the field' in which half the field were awarded Christmas hams. It goes without saying that some of those hams went to worthy scores, and others not so - but them's the breaks. Those who missed out won a ball.
After a few weeks of really wet weather with restricted use of carts and other inconveniences, the Gloucester course was close to pristine. Fairways were fabulous, greens in top condition, the skies were clear, and the days truly represented a great summer day in paradise. And all that without mention of the fabulous backdrop that makes the Gloucester course such a treat for members and visitors alike.
The winner of the event was Karen Howarth, who had a great round scoring 40 points and picking up one of the Nearest-to-the Pins on offer. The other Christmas hams were by Chris Murray 39; Roy Crichton 38; Kyran Laurie 37; Steve Macdonald 35; Paul Garland, Ken Wiggins and Mark Stone 34; Peter Wildblood 32; Steve Burns, Graeme Marsh, Paul Coote, Jim Bird and Rob Moore 31; and Elaine Murray and Brian McInnes 30 with Brian picking up the last ball on a count back from the field.
Speaking of which, balls were 'won' by Wayne Maddalena, Steve Williams, Bill Murray, Doug Blanch, Phil Hawkins, Rick Paff, Gary Threadgate, Kev Arney, John Herd, Andrew Lanehan and Jake Pickworth.
Nearest-to-the-Pins were won by Roy Crichton, Paul Garland and John Herd at the 4th and 13th holes and by Karen Howarth, Chris Murray, Doug Blanch and Ken Wiggins at the 6th and 15th holes. Long drive trophies were won by Elaine Murray, again, at the 3rd and 12th holes, and by Chris Murray, Bill Murray and Phil Hawkins at the 8th and 17th holes.
Super Sevens for the week ending Friday December 17 was won by Phil Hawkins with 20 points on a count back from the top ball winner Dave Mann 20, followed by Jim Bird 18, Ken Kriss 16, Steve Hurworth, Joost Werz and Rob Moore with 15 points each.
Saturday golf at Gloucester ends with a whimper as the course is closed on Christmas Day. Although the golf is back in earnest with the Monthly Medal and Individual Stroke event sponsored by the Arkwood Family to be played January 1, 2022. The Medal is decided across the field and there are net and gross winners declared in three grades. The following Saturday (January 8), there is an Individual Stableford event.
