If you haven’t already registered, there is still time to be a part of the 2017 soccer season.
Gloucester Soccer Club is holding a trail day on Saturday, April 8 for players are interested in giving the sport a try, as well as the players who have already registered.
Club publicity officer, Trudy Schultz said the day is about introducing the game to new players and getting an idea of what level all the players skills are at.
“To make sure we have evenly balanced team,” she said.
The club is open to players who are turning five this year, all they way up to players who are 18 years old.
Competition for the winter season is run mainly in Gloucester, with the teams made up within the age divisions, playing against each other on Saturday mornings.
The club also has a Manning Team, a mixed squad for players in the 14 years division, who play in the Football Mid North Coast southern division with some games played away.
Last years team where premiers, finishing at the top of the division and making it into the grand final.
Trudy said the club’s numbers are looking strong this year, being on par with last year.
The club hosted its fifth annual gala day, Aldi MiniRoos School Football Festival on Wednesday, March 29 in conjunction with Northern NSW Football for year three and four students from around the region, to give the sport a try.
Six schools attended the day with around 100 students learning more about the sport with the support MiniRoss Development Officer.
Trudy and her father, John Hughes, founder of the club back in 1976, made sure the club’s new canteen was open in the new clubhouse.
“We’ve been saving for 40 years,” John said.
It’s a far cry from the original car boot the club first used, which then progressed to a caravan.
More recently they’ve been using a shipping container which the new building replaced in time for last years season.
Thanks for additional assistance from fundraising and sports grants, it finally became a reality.
The new clubhouse even comes with a meeting room, where the club intends to run training sessions complete with video footage of the games.
So rest assured, that the “famous” breakfast cook up will continue on Saturday mornings.
“Glenn (Schultz) does the best bacon and egg roll in NSW,” John smiled.
Competition starts on April 22.
